DECORATIVE ARTS FOR BEGINNERS

New Class!!

In this class you will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of decorative painting. You will learn about the history of decorative arts, the basics of color theory and compostion. With hands-on practice using a variety of tools and techniques, this class will help you build a solid foundation of knowledge & skill needed to become a professional faux finisher. ($20 material fee included)

In this class you will learn to make beautiful wire formed pods and cages for just about anything! Bring objects to cage (shells, stones, beads), a wide link necklace chain, jeweler's chain nose pliers, round nose pliers & cutters, 3 ft of sterling silver Square wire (18 gauge) & 10 ft. of sterling silver round wire (26 gauge). (2 hours per class)

Pastels have a depth and richness to them that is unique. You begin with the fun of blending colors before moving on to dfining shapes in a still life. You concentrate on the colors of each object and where they are in relation to each other. Before any detail is added the artwork is filled with life and drama simply by applying color. As the shadows and lines bring your artwork into focus you are encouraged to find your own rhythm and style. All levels welcome.

Do you want to paint but need better basic drawing skills? Begin with drawing fundametals - proportion, line, value and negative space. Transitioning into painting, you learn how to compose and begin a painting, mix colors, use brushes, and handle paint. More advanced projects are given to returning students.

MOSAICS 101: INTRODUCTION TO MOSAICS

Explore the basics of mosic construction using a variety of materials new and used. Please bring found objects such as glass, tiles, jewelry, shells, stones, etc. At the end of the course you will have several pieces to decorate your home. Include materials for initial project.

Open up a new world of possibilities in jewelry design. Bend & wrap wire just like the professionals. Use jeweler's pliers to form wire links, squiggles, spirals, clasps and wire wrap beads. Learn to wrap "top drilled" & "center hole drilled" beads and pendants, stones without holes, Egyptian spirals & a few more surprises. (2 hours per class)

Learn the craft of leaded stained glass composition and creation. Participants will create original stained glass from their own drawings, as well as other images. Materials list will be provided at the beginning of class. All levels welcome.

Learn the basics of glass fusing construction. Explore fusing and slumping glass in the kiln to make both art pieces and functional ware. Create designs by layering sheets of glass, making patterns and using color.

2D DESIGN FOR TEENS!

Gain understanding of the principles and elements of drawing. You are introduced to the basic techniques and media of drawing. Lessons are accompanied by demonstrations and lectures and include both old master and contemporary works. All levels welcome.

LEARNING TO DRAW THE HUMAN FIGURE

Learning to draw the human form is an adventure! You learn to define the posture and mood of each figure pose through quick gesture drawings and longer poses. You become familiar with proportions and anatomy, but mostly the emphasis is on the intuitive quality of lines and shading techniques that give depth to the form.

For the one-day session, please register one week in advance.

1. COLOR RELATIONSHIPS: The first workshop will start with an introduction to basic color relationships based on the color wheel - what are primary & complimentary colors, cools & warms; understanding paints/pigments available in stores. The activities will focus on making color mixtures in a systematic way, modifying colors, broadening the range of basic colors to make rich variations.

2. FOCUS ON VALUE & INTENSITY: Students will learn to see and understand the value (darkness or lightness) of colors to create contrast & harmony, light & shadow in their paintings, and to distinguish value from intensity. Activities will focus on making a refrence guide for value & intensity and mixing color values.

3. MIX IT UP WITH COLOR STUDIES: Put into practice skills of matching or duplicating colors, mixing specific values and intensities of colors and using principles of color harmony in a small painting or study. We will also include more examples & discussion of how color ideas work in paintings of various styles, past and contemporary.

 

Here is your chance to play with various collage techniques materials and products while creating a mixed media work of art. No prior art experience needed. Prepare to have fun and get messy! Collage supplies included.

This one day workshop promises to be fun and rewarding. Students will spend the morning exploring some exercises from Betty Edwards' book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. In the afternoon you will review some unconventional watercolor techniques and produce a painting using methods learned throughout the day. (4 hour workshop)

DRAWING LANDSCAPES IN OIL PASTEL

Enjoy an informative, colorful and productive workshop in the use of oil pastel. Learn the differences between types of oil pastels and papers. Practice color mixing, blending, scratching and turpentine "wash" techniques. You spend much of the time draing beautiful landscapes in oil pastel. All materials included.

Learn the fine art of dye water color painting on silk. All the traditional techniques of silk painting will be explored along with information on types of dyes, silk, steam setting, stabalizing the silk. Painting on silk yardage and/or silk scarves will be our final goal.

Youth Artistic Discovery: Mixed Media 1

Our children's classes create a relaxed and non competitive atmosphere, enhancing the joy of artistic expression, while exploring the wonders of mixed media collage. As part of a series of collage classes, the session will focus on exploring collage techniques through fun and creative projects. All materials included in the fee. Ages 6-12
